While there’s certainly value in driving the same car for a long time, there are points when it tips past being financially smart to physically inconvenient and unsafe. If your vehicle exhibits any of these signs, it’s likely time to buy yourself a new car.

It’s a Money Pit

While it’s financially beneficial for car owners to use their car for as long as possible to get the best long-term value, it may not be worth it if it costs more to keep the vehicle moving on the road. If you’re constantly putting money into your old car for repairs and required upgrades, you may be better off spending that money on a new vehicle altogether.

This is especially true if you own an old car that doesn’t get good gas mileage and only seems to decline every year. You could save a fortune at the pump if you switch to a modern vehicle that’s much more efficient. If your old car needs a repair or new part that costs nearly as much as its total value, that’s a clear sign it’s time to buy yourself a new car.

The Interior Is Crumbling

If you slightly dread letting passengers see your vehicle’s interior because it’s crumbling and falling apart, it’s likely time to move on. The car may seem to run fine, but if the inside of it is a mess, why not invest in an automobile that you would enjoy being inside?

Some examples of problems in a car’s interior that are worth moving on from include:

  • Holes in the floor
  • Ripped or torn upholstery
  • Broken mechanical parts (knobs, buttons, etc.)
  • Leaking windows or sunroof

If your car’s interior is borderline unsalvageable, maybe it’s time to invest in something new.

Your Insurance Rate Is Rising

Older cars can be more expensive to insure, especially when they don’t have many of the advanced safety features that modern vehicles have. Considering their value, insuring them may not be worthwhile. Even drivers with spotless safety records can see a bump in their insurance rates as their cars age.

It may not be as valuable as a new car. But when you consider how much coverage you’re getting for its value, you could be overpaying. While a new car may cost more, you’re more likely to find an insurance policy that offers better value.

It Has Obsolete Technology

Vehicle technology can change quickly from year to year. Even if you have a vehicle that’s just a few years old, it likely has some outdated technological features. This is because of how quickly modern smartphone compatibility and navigation systems evolve.

Safety features and driver-assist systems also regularly improve, so if you have an older car, its safety features are likely outdated. It may be time to upgrade to something a little more convenient and safe.
