We all know the importance of maintenance for your car’s health, but tire maintenance is one aspect of car care that’s often overlooked. If you’re a beginner driver or new to owning a car, check out our quick tire maintenance guide to ensure your tires are well-maintained and safe to drive.

Keeping Your Tires Inflated

Perhaps the most important aspect of tire maintenance is ensuring they’re always properly inflated while driving. Underinflated or overinflated tires will wear down faster and aren’t as capable of accelerating or braking. Ensure your tires are always within your vehicle’s recommended PSI range, which you can find in the owner’s manual or printed on the driver-side doorjamb. It’s also wise to always have a tire gauge and a portable air compressor in your car so that you can check and adjust the tire pressure as needed.

Tire Rotations

Tire rotations are critical to tire maintenance, as they ensure your vehicle’s four tires wear tread evenly. A tire’s tread will wear down depending on its vehicle position, so tires should be rotated to ensure they all wear down evenly and last longer. Your car’s owner’s manual will have a recommended schedule for when tires should be rotated, but a general guideline is once a year or roughly every 10,000 miles.

Cleaning Your Tires

If you want something to last, you must keep it clean—and that’s true for tires, too. Washing your tires at least once a month is ideal to ensure dust, mud, salt, sand, and oils don’t stick to the tires and gradually wear down the tread. It’s best to wash the tires by hand with a wheel and tire-specific cleaning agent. Do this regularly, and your vehicle’s tires will last longer and look better.

Wheel Alignment

Wheel or tire alignments are also critical to tire care as they also ensure the tread on your vehicle’s tires wears down evenly. The rigorous impact of potholes, uneven roads, bumpy bridges, and railroad crossings can throw your vehicle’s wheels out of alignment. When the wheels are out of alignment, your car’s tires wear down faster and unevenly. Get a wheel alignment for your car at least once a year to ensure your tires are always in the correct arrangement.
